No. A chemical opus, perhaps. A masterpiece from a man who was adept with a conical flask as Michaelangelo was with a paintbrush, or Da Vinci with charcoal. Many may disagree but anyone who can who can discover, document and wax poetic about the subtle nuances of the effects of moving around an isomer or two...well, they must be unique to say the least. Sasha and his wife Ann were just that - a very special couple whose love exudes from their interactions, joined together in their mutual appreciation for psychedelics. Part memoir, part lab journal, Pihkal is an interesting read even for someone such as myself with only a minor interest in the science behind the experiences.We've been taught that psychedelics are psychosis-inducing compounds, highly addictive, terribly dangerous and ultimately will lead to the breakdown of society. The Shulgins, after DECADES of psychedelic use, are highly intelligent and very loving people with not a hint of psychological problems. In fact, after very sadly passing away at the ripe old age of 88, Sasha surpassed the average life expectancy for a western man by a good couple of years. Hardly the story of the drug-crazed addict dying alone in a back alley with a needle sticking out of their arm. Always honest (even with the "bad" experiences), Alexander Shulgin was a pioneer of psychoactive chemistry, a man who stuck to his convictions and followed a passion for discovering new socio-chemical interactions despite strong pressure from various government agencies.This is not the tale of a clandestine chemist passing dirty drugs to naive teens. This is not breaking bad. This book is an eye-opener into one of the unsung heroes of the scientific world, and his stories of benignly wandering around art museums while experimenting with new Phenethylamines is a far cry from the wild-eyed psychosis that certain people would have us believe psychedelics induce.

Can't say I expected this to be such a page-turner. As a chronically tangential reader with ADHD, I got the heebie jeebies, realizing the little b*stard's nearly 1000 pages; But, hey, both authors walk you through their (remarkable) lives with undying wit and sophistication.Great grab for a young gun like me, whose just begun to explore the world of psychopharmacology (more seriously, i.e.). I wanted to challenge myself, and wrestle with the complex literacy of drugs, and PIHKAL did just that. Without much personal practice in chemical synthesis, I had to tip-toe and fly-swat through some of the jargon.. But with any fair background in the sciences, the language is, all and all, surprisingly accessible - especially if you're willing to take some notes and revisit things. I'm really stoked on how much I've learned.

Sometimes it's complicated. Shulgin was a brilliant man, and this is a brilliant book. But it was going to be too dense to read given my passing level of interest in the subject.

A well written, compassionate and informative book on drugs that are lacking in any clear objective or written review. Alex is the only guy not in the CIA who was legally allowed to synthesize and test these amazing class of medications. A rare look into an unfortunately secretive world.

Sort of like reading about a train wreck. His stories are less self centered than hers but not people I would have been comfortable around. He comes off as very self confident, her as very insecure, needing to talk about how special she is in everything.Still an interesting read.

A wonderful read as well as enlightening regarding psychedelics.

This is a great book for both psychopharmacologists and people who are interested in psychopharmacology. Alexander Shulgin's experiences with all kinds of psychedelics takes you on a journey worth reading. Just keep in mind that while this book talks about the effects and pharmacokinetics of a lot of phenethylamines, it doesn't really touch the pharmacodynamics( the effects and interactions on neurotransmitters to be specific) aspect on it.

I am enjoying this book immensely! Every once in a while a book comes along that is perfect and this one is it.
